I'm very impressed by Kria's entries. I love the whole setting with the mushrooms and I like the textures a lot. Especially Shan's boots!

I think what's unfair is to shun different styles of art like 3D because if you're not good at 3D it wouldn't look good and it's the same with drawing. Although 3D doesn't neccecarily require drawing skills. But still a good idea is always better than a bad idea and presenting that requires a whole other set of skills than just beign technically good at something. You've got to have vision. I have no idea how Softimage|XSI works but I need to try it out some time. :x

Not sure if I can make it to the deadline since I'm supposed to be very busy blargh. I have an idea I want to use but I guess if not here then you can find it later in my sketchbook thread(when I get around to making it). :P

Keep it up all! All the artwork so far is looking mighty good~

i think some people are getting a bit touchy about the 3D artwork for a few reasons. Personally i think its amazing that you've done something on this scale as i've had alot of person experience modelling in maya/max in the past, so good job on that behalf.

But the problem is that its impossible to tell wether the environment was sourced from other artwork, possibly just edited a little. Also that the characters can be moved without having to recreate any artwork, means that someone entering this comp as a 3D artist could submit 100 different rendes, when essentially only one character and an environment have been modelled.

I think the artists are getting annoyed mainly because its not traditional Once again i do respect the committment to making pieces of that quality, just trying to clear up what everyone seems to be saying.

cheers

Yeah. I just personally don't like whining in a contest thread because every contest thread in history has it. I mean it's a contest and it's not meant to be fair in that sense. You just have to give it your best in the medium you're good with I believe.

Also it's not like any 2D artist couldn't just go mad collaging and taking backgrounds and patterns from photos and just making a lovely mess too. Good 3D will still be better than bad 2D and vice versa it doesn't have to be about the medium you use but which has a more impressive end result and personally I feel that posing a 3D character is anything BUT easy and I hate rigging but then again I'm a newb. :P

Sanra and I are still going through the process of working out the exact judging process. Our views on what we think are favorites change with every entry, so really until the close dates all bets are off.

What I will say is that originality, percieved effort spent as well as quality will be big factors in choosing the winners.

My guidance would be, if you are working or thinking of doing an entry, please do so, and leave the near impossible task of judging to Sanra and I.

We will be fair, we will take all these factors into account and I suspect when announcing the winners we'll say why we liked them.

Hope that helps

@ Tea - IMO, it's not a drawing contest. It's an art contest.

I've been keeping an eye on this thread for a while because a) I like art, and b) I like mesmers. They're a really fun class and style is always fun...shame that the substance is lacking... :\

There are quite a few entries that I like in here, but I'm kinda surprised that no one went the with the (imo) obvious theme: the Lyssa statue. I don't want to step on anyone artistic creation, especially given my lack of talent to draw anything beyond stick figures (and still poorly at that) that's what I would have attempted. Perhaps in my...ignorance of artistic work, it's simpling 'biting off more then you can chew', but that would have seemed to me to be a great theme.

I'd just like to note that I personally think any type of medium is okay. 3D modelling isn't exactly an easy thing to do, so I don't see that as unfair compared to drawing an entry.

@Taelith: Very nice work! Slightly disappointed to see you decided to scrap the Sanra-skateboard part of the picture though, I thought that looked really neat. But your new solo pictures looks great.

Ah, the old saying: 'I don't know art, but I know what I like.'

Exclamation Concerned.

Thank you for all the comments, it's amazing the dialog that has been divined from my creations. Unfortunately, it is the content of that dialog that has me writing this, as things seem to have reached an unnecessary crescendo. I wasn't initially going to reply to comments of this nature, but a few inaccurate points and concerns have arisen that I'd like to clear up. First, take a look at page 1, post #18 from Irukandji:
Are there any mediums you'd not like to be used, like, for example, Photoshop; or is it up to us if we send in a CG picture or a completely handdrawn one?
And right below that, the reply from Shanaeri Rynale herself:
Both is fine, ty

That should have precluded all the "this is unfair" posts (and any further of that nature), as it was made clear on page 1 that any medium is valid, specifically CG. I made certain of this before investing the two dozen+ hours that I have in my pieces. Regardless of whether people understood that CG is allowed, I'm disappointed in the negative feedback my pieces have garnered simply because of the medium used. I'd pity the person that decided to do a clay sculpture or take a photo of a paper model diorama. It's quite a downer to come here and see a comment like "it's unfair, but I'm not going to complain." Well, you just did.

The perception that this medium is "easy" or "automated" couldn't be farther from the truth. The concern that the environment I built is "sourced from other artwork" (huh??) is unfounded. Everything was built from scratch, from a blank workspace, and I think the uniqueness of it all is proof that it was created new, specifically for this project. Honestly, where would I get completely rigged models of two Guild Wars characters (and more specifically, Shan and Sanra models, which have unique appearances!), Maguuma Jungle, and the hundreds of megabytes of texture data that I created for it all? Absolutely preposterous and insulting.

On a lighter note, I greatly appreciate the appreciation, thanks for reading this, and thank you to all the artists who are submitting fantastic pieces here. If anyone is interested in trying their hand at XSI, they have a trial version here. If XSI is a bit daunting, you can try Blender, which is a full-featured package in its own right.

Thank you,
~Kria

Absolutely love the entries so far. I'm really glad right now I decided to hold this contest

@KriaKorturi: Don't worry, I promise you your CG artwork will be judged on equal ground compared to all other entries. I personally think CG artwork can look as great as any other type of artwork, so I'm glad to see the variation for this contest.

Hi rez version:
Awesome work on that one ^^, theres one small change I would make to that and I hope you can still do it

The right mesmer looks too surprised I think, if you could flatten the top of the eyes a bit, revealing less 'eye' she would look sexier and less surprised.

Ugh, chill out people. I was just saying that people tend to be bias towards computer generated art. No need to start freaking out on me/everyone who said anything.

I wasn't complaining. I was just saying what I felt, and last I checked I was allowed to voice my opinion.

This is exactly what I mean. 3D takes so much time and effort to create. To actually do it you need to have good nerves, love for tinkering with little details for countless hours and loads and loads of patience! This is how I feel and I would be disappointed if it weren't appreciated in the way it should be.

In the time that it took me to create one caroon monkey in 3D and posing it I could have easily created 12 digital paintings of it instead. Go figure. Took me several days whereas it takes me approx half a day to create a 2D painting. :P

Thanks for that. Now to actually find the time to do it...
I think I've tried zbrush before but that was so long ago I hardly remember.

, lovely painting! The Lyssa "theme" I think was already put to use in the very first posts of the competition though. Based on one of the Lyssa artworks or murals. Anyway I think it's a great theme. You have some great details in the clothes and the hair is very pretty. Good stuff. :B~~

This one has some great detail to it. Notice the background is the skill icon for 'Tease'. I watched her create it (Skye is my fiancee) and it's amazing how much time these things take. She spent well over 35 hours on this thing.
